City of Thornton, Colorado
The City of Thornton is developing a new Active Adult Center at Margaret Carpenter Park to replace the existing center and provide more space for their growing programs. The design team engaged the community in two months of outreach, including four public open houses, multiple facility tours, and an on-line survey in order to address community needs. The resulting input helped to solidify a program that meets the community’s active adult needs now and well into the future.
Designed to enhance the lives of the active adults in the community, the building program focuses on social spaces, learning and making spaces, mind and body wellness, and active fitness spaces.
Community Spaces: events hall with commercial kitchen and theater, lounge/library/coffee bar, community classrooms, a teaching kitchen, and a wet arts classroom
Wellness: therapy rooms, massage rooms and consultation space
Recreation: fitness facility and exercise classrooms
The emphasis on acoustics, accessibility, and physical comfort ensure all of the spaces are customized to the active adult user group. In the programming phase, the team worked with the client to develop “design threads” to guide the feel and personality of the design. The traditional forms of the building architecture include a modern twist in the materials and detailing. The interior finishes are warm, comfortable, and inviting for the senior patrons of the facility. Additionally, the team designed the facility to achieve LEED Silver Certification to provide occupants with a healthy indoor environment, as well as reduce green house gas emissions, energy usage, water consumption and lower operating costs.
